Madōgu (魔導具, Magical Tool) are magical tools designed to help either a Makai Priest or Makai Knight in their mission to seek and destroy Horrors.

Overview[]

Original Universe[]

In the on-going conflict against Horrors, Makai Priests have designed and classified certain items and living beings as magical tools that helps them combat Horrors or contain potential threats against dark forces. For priests, many are reliant on tools to increase their darkness sensory, combat power, and efficiency on the field; Makai Knights may not have a priest to provide field sensory or a tool to help them have an edge in battle. To remedy this problem, the Makai Order have provided their knights with tools to help them combat the forces of darkness. Because the definition of a tool is broad, it is broken down to the commonly known ones such as madō jewelry, living beings, the gōryū, and makai equipment.

Madō Jewelry[]

One type of madōgu is the sentient Gothic jewelry (ring, necklace, bracelet, mirror, etc). They can independently speak and can voice their own opinions to the knight. They're essentially portable magical tools that have many abilities similar to a priest. Each Madōgu has its own unique capabilities, personality, and powers. Because no two Madōgu are exactly alike, it's difficult to give a proper definition of its capabilities. However, all madōgu have several common abilities they share: dark energy detection, Horror sensor, provides wisdom, and knowledge to its wearer. With it, a knight can operate with greater independence and without the constant referral to a priest during their missions.

An interesting fact about Madō Jewelries which explained their great knowledge pertaining Horrors and other related topics more than officials of Makai Order themselves is that they used to be either benign Horrors or Makai Beasts who have willingly pledged to the Order's cause as the partner of their respective titled Makai Knight.[1] As the proof of their allegiance, these Horrors or Makai Beasts have their consciousness and fraction of their powers transferred into jewelry themed after their visage, at times leaving their physical forms behind in the process.

Madō Jewelry are made with purified spring water. When the water dries out inside the madōgu, they begin to deteriorate and spontaneously burn [2].

Living Tools[]

Certain animals, even human, have special abilities that are valuable to the Makai Order and are classified as magical tools. Because of how makai society view tools, they are considered an end to a means and not treated with respect. The Barg is a unique makai beast that can seal Horrors and dark energies away. As such, Makai Knights would intentionally stab the creature so it can cleanse dark energies away, but leaves the creature in agony. Mayuri's unique ability to seal any dark being like a walking darkness vault made her invaluable in sealing dark entities that were beyond conventional means, but she was also mistreated and not considered human. As such, animals deemed as magical tools have an unfortunate life under the will of the Makai Order.

Gōryū[]

These mechanical Madōgu are invented by Leo Fudō and Sigma Fudō; they are automatons meant to help the Makai Order defeat the Horrors by boosting the combat power of the priests. Because Leo and Sigma had different intentions and specifications for their creations, the gōryū were both respected and dreaded in the field. Leo's version was the Standard Gōryū, a mass production series of dragon themed semi-sentient drones that would boost the combat strenth of a priest to defeat a Horror. This allowed priests to patrol and manage their own districts more independently and increased their survibility in combat without the need for a knight to intervene. The project was so successful that the order supported Leo in creating new and advanced units to further their cause.

With Sigma, he also created them for a similar purpose, but to also further his personal agenda. Believing both the knights and the order as a problem, he adopted a form of dark alchemy that allowed him to instantly create advanced and monstrous units (ex:Tekki) that can kill lesser knights. It was his ambition to use his gōryū to rebuild the Makai Order in his twisted image and eliminate the Horror threat while proving the inferiority of the knights.

Makai Equipment[]

Makai Equipment encompasses tools that don't belong to previous categories, such as Madō Brush, Sounding Plate, Madō Bagua Tag, Demon Compass, and Magic Clothing. This also includes more specialized tools such as Phosphorus Arrow and Demon Sword of Rubis.

Ryūga-verse[]

In the Ryūga-verse, Madōgu are classified in a similar manner. In a wider inclusion, Madōgu includes advanced synthetic magical tools that mimic's animals or even a human-like warrior. Madō Ring Zaruba is grouped up along the likes of Rago and Agō as part of this class. Madō Jewelries however has fallen out of fashion amongst the knights and priests. They are more or less treated as relics from a bygone era (as Makai Knight Zen reacted with curiosity and wonder over never seeing a sentient madōgu). This is likely motivated due to the fact such ancient tools requires a contract with its user that shortens their life while in use.

Anime Series[]

In Anime Series, Madōgu are classified in a similar manner with both Original Universe and Ryūga-verse. Here, madō jewelry's sentience is clarified due to the tools infused with the essence of Horrors who had neither enmity nor hostility to mankind and the Makai Order.
